Lady Champs Fall to Second-Ranked Raiderettes on the Road

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. – The Cascade Lady Champions (6-8, 0-1) completed their regular season series against the 2nd-ranked team in Class A, the Moore County Raiderettes (14-3, 1-0), on Tuesday night with a 56-29 road loss.

Despite losing star Madison Dingler in December, Chad Spencer and his Raiderettes found themselves at No. 2 in the first USA Today Class A TSSAA rankings earlier this week behind defending state champion, Pickett County, and they showcased just why the voters view them so highly against Cascade.

In her return to her former home gymnasium, Caroline Parker scored a team-high 12 points for the Lady Champs. Kaegan Young, after being held scoreless and without a field-goal attempt in the first half, scored six points in the third quarter to finish second on the team in scoring for the night.

Meanwhile, Moore County saw three girls finish in double-digits scoring led by Katie Fletcher’s 15 points. Ellie Graham finished with 11 points while Ally Sharp chipped in with 10 points, all coming in the first half.

To start the game, Cascade more than held their own defensively, holding Moore County to just one second chance opportunity, but the Lady Champs were unable to crack the extended 2-3 zone of the Raiderettes. The incredible length at Moore County’s disposal disrupted just about everything Cascade tried to do offensively. It also didn’t help that Young was saddled with two fouls early on, putting the Lady Champs most prolific weapon on the bench for the majority of the opening period. Moore County held Cascade to zero field goals through the first eight minutes, but the hosts only led by five, 7-2.

In the second quarter, the Raiderettes began to force more live-ball turnovers, leading to runouts and fastbreak opportunities. Moore County extended their lead, outscoring Cascade, 18-6, in the quarter to take a 25-8 lead into the halftime locker room.

To their credit, the Lady Champs never quit fighting, and they came out of halftime outscoring Moore County, 12-11, to make it a 36-20 game going into the final frame. Young and Parker scored 14 points combined in the final quarter-and-a-half, but in the end Moore County’s length and experience were too much to overcome. Both teams emptied the bench about halfway through the quarter, and the final score reflected as such with the Raiderettes taking home the 27-point home win, 56-29.

Moore County improves to 14-3 (1-0).

Cascade falls to 6-8 (1-0) and will return home to play Chapel Hill on Friday night, LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 starting at 5:45 p.m.
