FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. – The Cascade Lady Champions (5-2) put up a combined 34 points in the second half at Fayetteville City (0-4) to take home the win, 57-44.
Cascade held the Lady Tigers to just 27% shooting from the field and forced 19 turnovers while outscoring the hosts, 30-18, in the paint. Kaegan Young led all scorers with 21 points on the night to go along with eight rebounds, Lizzie Keele chipped in with 13 points and six assists, and Jacelyn Laughlin added nine points of her own with five steals. Suzanna Crews led the Lady Champs with 15 rebounds to go along with her seven points.
Te’Asia Ewing led the Lady Tigers with 13 points, four rebounds, four steals, and four assists, while Kayden Parks added 12 points on a trio of three-pointers.
In the first quarter, the Lady Champions struggled early on, but eventually took a 14-5 lead to close the opening period. However, the Lady Tigers’ feisty and tenacious defense gave Cascade some problems in the second quarter with Fayetteville City trimming the lead to just five points, 23-18, heading into the halftime locker room.
Cascade would keep the Lady Tigers at bay, never letting the hosts get closer than four points the rest of the way, but Fayetteville City continued to hang around until the Lady Champs closed the third quarter up by 11 points, 40-29.
Despite the deficit, the hosts had one more run left in them, trimming the lead to just six points, 40-34, early in the period. Then, sensing the moment that saw her team needing a basket to stem the tide, Kaegan Young activated takeover by knifing her way to the paint for an old fashioned three-point-play that jump-started a personal eleven-point fourth quarter that matched the Lady Tigers’ total. Young went 5/5 at the free throw line in the period for good measure to close out the game, 57-44.
Cascade improves to 5-2 overall and returns home for a major test against Class 1A power Richland on Tuesday night, LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 and AM 1400 starting at 5:45 p.m.
