UNIONVILLE, Tenn. – In a turn of events hardly anyone outside of Chapel Hill could have seen coming, the Cascade Lady Champions (12-2-1, 8-0-0) suffered just their second defeat of the season, and it came at the hands of the Lady Rockets from Chapel Hill (11-5, 6-2), 3-2, on Thursday at Community.
Cascade came into the final having handedly defeated the Lady Rockets in their two previous matchups – 7-0 and 5-1 respectively – but this time, Chapel Hill jumped on the Lady Champs early and often.
Clara Jung opened the scoring in just the 5th minute to put the visitors on the scoreboard ahead, 1-0, on an assist by Sydney Petty. Three minutes later, Baeliy Stalnecker doubled Chapel Hill’s advantage off an assist from Alex Whiteside to take a 2-0 lead.
After a pair of efforts from the Lady Champions were off target, but then Lexi Comstock scored her 25th goal of the season to pull one back for Cascade and trim the lead in half.
Neither team was able to find another goal, sending the tense affair to halftime with Chapel Hill holding a one goal lead, 2-1.
As the second half began and still both sides were unable to score, Stalnecker provided what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to secure her brace.
Comstock matched Stalnecker minutes later, securing a brace of her own to trim the lead to 3-2, but ultimately there was not enough time remaining on the clock for Cascade, and the Lady Rockets secured their historic district championship.
The Lady Rockets will host Cornersville in the semifinals of the Region 5-A Tournament on Tuesday night.
Cascade will travel to District 10-A Champions, Culleoka, on Tuesday night in the other region semifinal matchup.
