WOODBURY, Tenn. – After seeing its six-game winning streak come to an end at No. 1 Richland on Saturday, many expected the No. 4 ranked Cascade Lady Champions (16-5, 3-0) to come out with an increased level of focus and intensity for Tuesday night’s road trip to former district foe, Cannon County (8-7, 1-1). Instead, the Lady Champs came out flat, scoring just five points in the first quarter before a late rally came up short in a shocking 48-44 upset inside of Robert A. Harris Gymnasium.
Kaegan Young finished with a game-high 25 points for Cascade with 18 coming in the second half alone, but she was the only Lady Champion to finish in double figures. Caroline Parker added nine points while Lizzie Keele chipped in with seven in the second half.
For Cannon County, Elly Bain scored a team-high 17 points, and Abi Alexander scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half.
Early on, the Lionettes managed to prevent Cascade from getting to the paint, taking a 9-5 lead at the end of the opening period. Cascade shot seven threes in the first and made just one while only getting up four shots inside the arc.
In the second quarter, both teams found some semblance of offense, and the Lady Champions actually outscored the Lionettes, 12-10, to head into the halftime locker room down by just two points, 19-17.
Coming out for the second half, Cannon County ramped the intensity up another level, holding Cascade to just eight points in the third quarter en route to a 34-25 lead for the hosts heading into the final frame.
Young began to assert herself offensively in the fourth quarter – highlighted by her connecting on three triples in a row – and led her squad back to within three points, 46-43, with 13.3 seconds remaining after knocking down a pair of free throws. Cascade had to foul, but Bain missed both free throws to leave the door cracked open for the Lady Champions. With a timeout in Cascade’s pocket, Young opted to quickly try and extend the game by going for the layup or getting to the free throw line, but her heavily contested layup attempt would not fall and there was no whistle blown.
Bain split a pair of free throws with five seconds left to seal the upset win for Cannon County.
Cascade suffers back-to-back losses for the first time this season, falling to 16-5 overall. The Lady Champions return home for District 9-AA play against Summertown on Thursday night, LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 and AM 1400 starting at 5:45 p.m.
