No. 5 Lady Cavaliers Complete Season Sweep of Eaglettes

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – Despite an inspired first-half effort against the District 6-AAAA leaders, No. 5 Cookeville (19-3, 4-1), on Friday night, the Shelbyville Central Golden Eaglettes (6-16, 0-5) struggled to keep pace in the second half, falling 68-35 inside the Eagles’ Nest on Homecoming night.

Early on, the Eaglettes managed to stay within arm’s length, trailing by just eight points, 21-13, at the end of the opening period. Janiya Leslie connected on a three-pointer, Dara Frazier knocked down two pairs of free throws, and Jada Berry tacked on a pair of buckets around the rim. However, the visitors were able to find a balanced scoring attack on their own offensive end. Cara Lee Gilbert along with Callie Gilbert each scored five of their 15 total points in the first quarter, and Lauren Gillies netted six of her seven total points in the period to lead Cookeville.

The script flipped in the second stanza with the Eaglettes actually outscoring Cookeville, 8-to-7, to trim the lead to 28-21 heading into the halftime locker room. Leslie knocked in another three-pointer, leading Shelbyville with five of her team-high 14 points coming in the second while Berry tacked on another tough layup. Meanwhile, Cara Lee Gilbert was the only Lady Cavalier to connect from downtown in the frame.

Unfortunately for the hosts, their upset hopes were quickly dashed coming out for the second half when the Lady Cavaliers outscored Shelbyville, 18-to-5, in the third quarter alone to take a 46-26 lead heading into the final frame. Leslie scored three points while Dara Frazier scored two, but the Lady Cavs’ balanced scoring attack was simply too much to handle. Cara Lee Gilbert scored five more, Callie Gilbert added four, and Sadie Garrett chipped in with five of her seven points coming in the third.

Cookeville continued to grow its lead in the fourth quarter as well, outscoring the hosts 25-to-9 en route to the win. Leslie tacked on three points as did Yasmine McFarland in the period.

Cookeville improves to 19-3 overall.

The Eaglettes fall to 5-16 overall. Shelbyville continues District 6-AAAA play on Tuesday with a trip to Lincoln County at 6:00 p.m.
