Shelbyville Central Golden Eaglettes

The Shelbyville Central Golden Eaglettes returned to their winning ways on Friday on the second night of a back-to-back, blowing out Riverdale 64-20 on the road to complete the season sweep.

The Eaglettes didn’t allow a single field goal for the Lady Warriors in the first quarter as they raced out to a 24-1 lead after the first eight minutes. The second quarter was more of the same, as Shelbyville led 35-5 at halftime. They came out of the locker room for the second half with the result already in hand and easily coasted to a 44-point win.

Senior Sammie Brown lit up the scoreboard in the first half, scoring 13 of her 14 points in the opening 16 minutes. Senior Paige Blackburn had a game-high 15 points from five threes, and Lily Brown was the third Eaglette to get in double figures with eleven points. Lanaya Young also contributed nine points.

The Eaglettes had beaten Riverdale 41-18 in the first game between these two schools back on December 8th, so it was nice for the traveling crowd to see the offense get back on the right track in the second matchup.

Shelbyville Central improves to 11-4 and begins District 9-AAAA play on Tuesday night at Coffee County, live on WLIJ 98.7 with coverage starting at 5:45 p.m.

Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles

The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles snapped their seven-game losing streak on Friday night, pulling away in the fourth quarter to complete the season sweep over Riverdale, 60-45.

In their final game before district play, the Eagles had three players in double figures. Shamarion Draper led the way with 14 points, Terrence Johnson had 13, and Tae ‘Shawn Shelton chipped in with 11, but it was Tink Cannon that helped close out the win for Shelbyville as he scored all six of his points in the final frame.

Entering that final frame, the Eagles held only a one-point lead over the Warriors, 39-38. In the fourth quarter, Shelbyville clamped down on defense, holding Riverdale to seven points in the final eight minutes of the game to secure the win.

It was an impressive showing on the second night of a back-to-back, especially considering how back-and-forth the first 24 minutes were. Shelbyville led 19-18 after the first quarter, 27-25 at halftime, and then 39-38 at the end of the third quarter. The Eagles won the first matchup at home, 68-55, back on December 8th.

Shelbyville Central improves to 4-12 and begins District 9-AAAA play on Tuesday night at Coffee County, live on WLIJ 98.7 with coverage starting at 5:45 p.m.
