SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (16-9, 4-1) could not overcome a 26-point outing from Cookeville’s Walker Redding on Friday night, suffering their first district defeat in the process, 61-51, at the Eagles’ Nest.

Redding got the party started early, knocking down three of his five total triples in the first quarter alone as the visiting Cavaliers jumped out to a 20-10 lead at the end of one. Jalen Denk added seven of his 14 total points in the period as well. For Shelbyville, Tae’Shawn Shelton and Jack Conditt each connected on a three-pointer.

In the second stanza, the Golden Eagles flipped a switch defensively, outscoring the Cavaliers by six, 14-8, to trim the lead to 28-24 heading into the halftime locker room. The hosts held Redding to just two points in the frame while Shelbyville’s Jevon Lee scored six of his team-high 18 points in the second period to bring his first-half total to eight. Shelton, who finished with 10 points, added four more in the second.

Coming out for the second half, Cookeville began to find their rhythm again with Redding nailing a three and finishing with seven points in the third quarter while Bryce Herren scored eight of his 17 points in the third period alone.  Meanwhile, Tommie Cannon countered with a pair of triples and netted eight of his 12 points in the third with Lee tacking on four points, but Shelbyville was outscored, 15-12, and trailed 43-36 heading into the final frame.

Cookeville continued to methodically grow its lead in the fourth with Redding scoring eight more points in the period while Herren went a near-perfect 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Lee led the Golden Eagles with six points, but Shelbyville was unable to generate enough offense to engineer a comeback, eventually falling by 10 points.

Cookeville improves to 14-7 overall.
