Small ball, errors doom Viqueens in tourney

UNIONVILLE — A handful of untimely errors and Forrest’s execution of the small-ball game plan was more than top-seeded Community could overcome in the District 7-AA tournament on Tuesday afternoon in a 7-2 loss.
Forrest didn’t waste time getting on the board when the game’s lead-off batter, Macyn Kirby safely reached base on a Viqueen error.
She later scored on a bunt-single by Christa Warren.
From there, the game settled into a quality pitcher’s duel between Lady Rocket starter Ella Chilton and Viqueen freshman Annie Prince.
The Lady Rockets padded their lead in the fifth inning with a run on another Community error and a two RBI single by Chilton to give Forrest a 4-0 lead.
Community cut into the Lady Rocket lead in the bottom of the fifth when Chloe West ground out to first, but scored Taylar Wessner from third.
The game took a scary turn in the top of the sixth inning when Prince took a comebacker off her leg and left the with an apparent ankle injury.
Wessner took over and pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for Community.
Forrest went on to score three more runs, including one in the top of the sixth on a sac-bunt, and then two more in the seventh, including one on a steal for home and another sacrifice that went down for a RBI.
Hoping for a little seventh-inning magic to replicate the last time the two teams met in Unionville, Community, with its back to the wall, went to work in the bottom of the seventh.
Wessner drew a one-out walk and then scored on a single to right by Carlie Blanton.
But that was all the run support the Viqueens were able to muster up in the seventh as Chilton settled in and recorded the final two outs to advance to the District 7-AA title.
Prince pitched well for 5 1/3 innings before leaving the game with the injury to her lower leg.
She gave up five runs on five hits, but only one of which was earned.
Wessner pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits to go along with one strikeout.
At the plate, Community tagged Chilton for five base hits.
The loss dropped Community to the consolation bracket where county rival Cascade awaits in an elimination matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
