Three Keys to Look For in Girls’ ‘Battle of Bedford’ Rematch

BELL BUCKLE, Tenn. – The Cascade Lady Champions welcome in the Community Viqueens  for another key District 9-AA matchup on Tuesday night.

Tuesday also happens to be the final home regular season contest for Cascade, and Senior Night celebrations will begin at 5:00 p.m. at The Stable.

In the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader the No. 7 team in this week’s NWSA/USA TODAY poll, Cascade, comes in at 18-5 overall with a perfect 5-0 record in district play following a 59-52 road win over Loretto on Friday. Janie Demonbreum’s Lady Champions took down Cody Pierce’s Viqueens in Unionville back on Jan. 13 in a 51-46 thriller.

Community has not played since before the recent winter storms, last taking the court on Jan. 20 at Chapel Hill. The Viqueens defeated the Lady Rockets, 52-30, improving to 10-11 overall and 1-3 in the district, but this will be their first game action in two weeks after Friday’s game against Summertown was postponed.

Anna Haskins (3) drives past Summertown's Zoei Bonner (23) in the Viqueens' district opener on Jan. 9. Haskins scored 19 points in the first meeting with Cascade on Jan 13.

  1.  3pt Proficiency

In the first meeting, Cascade made 10 three-pointers on 43.5% shooting from behind the arc. Conversely, the Viqueens made just five triples at a 29% clip in the five-point loss. In their most recent outing against Loretto, the Lady Champions shot an incredibly efficient 8-of-16 from downtown in a seven-point win. Individually, Lizzie Keele leads Cascade with nine connections from deep while shooting 39% from outside. Caroline Parker is second with six makes on 33% shooting, and Kaegan Young is tied for third with Jocelyn Laughlin with five made triples in five games.

Savannah Pearson leads the Viqueens with eight made threes on about a 30% rate in four district games so far. Anna Haskins, who leads Community by averaging 16.8 PPG in district play, is second behind Pearson with four made threes.

Both teams generate looks from beyond the arc by getting paint touches, but they do it in different ways. Cascade opts almost exclusively for drive-and-kick while the Viqueens tend to find more opportunities from post touches with Alyssa White.

  2.  Points off Turnovers

Cascade thrives off of not just forcing turnovers, but from scoring the basketball directly because of said turnovers. In the first meeting, the Lady Champions actually committed more turnovers than the Viqueens – 13 to 12 – but Cascade managed to turn those 12 turnovers into 14 points while Community only managed six points from 13 forced turnovers. Cascade won this battle by eight points in the first matchup while winning the game by five.

  3.  Dynamic Duos

The headliner for this matchup is the dynamic duos on both teams – Kaegan Young and Lizzie Keele for Cascade against Anna Haskins and Alyssa White for Community. Young leads all scorers averaging 19.8 PPG in district play, and she put up 21 points back on Jan. 13. The senior all-around star is a Class AA Miss Basketball candidate this season, and she has scored 20 or more points in three of the five district games for Cascade this season. Her running mate, Lizzie Keele, has also shined in district play, averaging 12.2 points per game while playing elite defense on the opposition’s best perimeter player in almost every game. The sophomore guard scored 16 points and knocked down four threes in Unionville, and she will likely be matched up with Community’s star, Anna Haskins, for much of the game on Tuesday.

For the Viqueens, Anna Haskins is averaging 16.8 PPG through the first four games of district play this season, and she put up 19 points against Cascade with a trio of three-pointers in the first meeting. The senior guard’s partner in crime is typically her center, Alyssa White. White blocked five shots in the first game against the Lady Champions, but she was held to seven points on just six shot attempts. She averages 7.8 PPG in district play, but look for the Viqueens to try and establish White early and often if they hope to pull the massive upset.

Following the Senior Night celebrations, the game is scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. and can be listened to LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 and AM 1400 or on their mobile app.
