SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles trailed the Tullahoma Wildcats by just six points at halftime, but ultimately could not find enough points on the offensive end to muster up a comeback attempt, losing 63-43 on Tuesday night inside of Rick Insell Gymnasium.

The second matchup between these two rivals in the “Battle of Highway 41-A” proved to be more of the same as the first matchup that Tullahoma won by 19 earlier this season. The Wildcats saw four different players score in double-figures while Shelbyville Central had none.

For Tullahoma, Xavier Ferrell led the way with a game-high 19 points, including 11 in the second half. Khani Johnson, Austin Tinnon, and Jayden Thompson chipped in with 14 points, 13 points, and 12 points, respectively.

After the first quarter, the Golden Eagles struggled to find any consistent offense. Tae’Shawn Shelton and Ladd Sparrow tied for a team-high seven points while Jordan Taylor and Malek Johnson chipped in with six points apiece.

It was a promising first quarter for the home side, only trailing the Wildcats, 17-14, at the end of the opening period. Johnson connected on a pair of three-pointers against the Tullahoma zone while Shelton and Tommie Cannon each put in a pair of two-point field goals – including a pair of Shelton dunks – to keep pace with the Wildcats.

In the second quarter, Tullahoma slowly grew their lead to six points by halftime, 29-23, as they outscored Shelbyville, 12-9, in the period after switching to a man-to-man defense. Thompson put in 10 of his 12 points in the first half to lead the way for the Wildcats.

Then, as the second half got underway, Tullahoma began to impose their will on the Golden Eagles, outscoring Shelbyville, 16-11, in the third quarter to take a 45-32 lead into the final frame. Tullahoma utilized a balanced offensive attack between Johnson and Farrell with the two combining for 11 of the 16 points scored in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Tullahoma ensured the result was a formality, scoring 18 more points in the period to take home the 20-point road win. Shelbyville Central scored just 20 points in the second half compared to 34 for the Wildcats, and that proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Tullahoma improves to 9-1 on the season.

Shelbyville Central falls to 5-7 overall. Their next game is scheduled for Friday afternoon against the Blackman Blaze at the Outback Classic in Murfreesboro at 2:00 p.m.
