SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (3-5, 3-2) trailed by just two possessions at halftime against Region 6-6A foe Ravenwood (8-0, 4-0), but four total turnovers led the way for the visiting Raptors to pull away in a 45-14 win on Friday night.
This loss ended a streak of seven-consecutive home wins for the Golden Eagles dating back to last season. Despite the defeat, the Golden Eagles sit in prime position to clinch a trip back to the postseason for the third consecutive season in their first year in Class 6A.
In the first half, Robert Bailey and Stephen Bobo both found the end zone after falling behind 21-0 in the first six minutes. Against arguably the best public program in the state of Tennessee, Bailey tallied 71 yards rushing and one touchdown on 28 attempts. Meanwhile, Stephen Bobo finished 10/19 passing for 141 yards with those three interceptions while running twice for 20 yards and one touchdown.
The Golden Eagles’ two touchdowns in the second quarter trimmed the Raptors’ lead to 28-14, but Ravenwood’s defense took over the game in the second half, pitching a shutout and outscoring the hosts 17-0 in the process.
Shelbyville showcased a few new wrinkles that Golden Eagle fans could see moving forward, including some read option with Bailey and Torrion Mathis both in the backfield. Also, Cyonn Rucker, a freshman who has started two games under center this season as well as becoming one of the best defensive backs on the team, got himself a few reps at wide receiver with Bobo at quarterback as well as coming away with his first interception of the season.
Xzayvier Jordan hauled in a 51-yard reception, his longest of the season, to get Shelbyville in position for one of the two touchdowns in the first half, and Jack Conditt finished with three catches for 39 yards. Chandler Jones added a pair of receptions for 18 yards as well.
Ravenwood’s quarterback, Femi Babaloa, got the scoring started on Ravenwood’s opening drive, breaking multiple tackles before reversing field to find the end zone from 48 yards out with 10:28 to go in the opening period and go up 7-0.
On Shelbyville’s ensuing possession, Grant Lucas nailed Bobo on a pass attempt, knocking the ball out in the process and into the path of Matthew Anderson for a 41-yard scoop-and-score to quickly double the Raptors’ lead to 14-0 with 8:19 left in the first quarter.
After forcing another turnover – a deflected interception by James Nelson for his third INT of the season – the Raptors found the end zone from 24 yards out thanks to a Caden Pace run, taking a 21-0 lead with just over six minutes to go in the first quarter.
Finally, the Golden Eagles found a way to move the ball into Ravenwood territory, and as the second quarter began, Robert Bailey punched it in from one-yard out to get Shelbyville on the board with just over 11 minutes left in the first half.
Ravenwood would find the end zone once again – this time from 32 yards out – when Babaloa kept the ball on a speed option down the left sideline for his second rushing touchdown of the night.
Bobo orchestrated one more touchdown drive in response, and the Golden Eagles’ quarterback dove into the end zone from one yard out on fourth-and-goal to cut the lead to 28-14 with 4:51 left in the first half.
Shelbyville forced a punt on the ensuing Ravenwood possession, and then the two teams traded interceptions. First, a Bobo pass was picked off and returned to midfield by Danny Brown. However, on the very first play of the Raptors’ drive, Babaloa was intercepted by Cyonn Rucker on an underthrown deep ball down the left sideline with 57 seconds left in the first half sent both teams to the locker room with the Golden Eagles hanging on.
Shelbyville got the ball to start the second half, but after a critical holding penalty nullified what would have been the third first down of the drive, Bobo threw his third and final interception of the night on 3rd-and-15 to Wyatt Appleton. Appleton nearly took it all the way back for six, but was brought down inside the 10-yard line, allowing Maverick Chance to find the end zone on the very next play and grow the lead to 35-14.
Ultimately, the Golden Eagles were unable to score again and the Raptors tacked on 10 more unanswered points to close out yet another Region 6-6A road win.
With the win, Ravenwood sets up a massive showdown against Brentwood for the top seed from Region 6-6A for the playoffs.
Shelbyville suffers its second loss in region play, and will have a quick turnaround to host non-region foe Hendersonville on Thursday night before closing out the region schedule at home against a struggling Coffee County team.
