Vikings Down Rockets in Landon Berman's Return From Injury

Posted

Unionville, Tenn. – The Community Vikings (11-10, 1-3) picked up their first District 9-AA win of the season against Chapel Hill (4-13, 0-5) at home, 71-62, on Friday night.

Eight different Vikings scored at least one basket in a well-rounded effort, highlighted by Austin Stickler’s team-high 14 points, Landon Lovvorn’s 13 points, Landon Berman’s 12 points, and Jaxson Williams’ 10 points. Berman, in his first game back from an injury that kept him sidelined to open district play, provided an extra scoring punch that the Vikings seemed to be lacking in the earlier midweek loss to Cascade.

For the visiting Rockets, Tristan Goad scored a game-high 28 points to keep Chapel Hill within striking distance. Matthew Yeager and Jean Astolfi joined Goad in double-figures, finishing with 15 points and 11 points, respectively.

To start off, Community saw seven different scorers in the opening period, taking a 23-18 lead at the end of the opening period.

In the second quarter, Chapel Hill, spearheaded by 14 points from Goad, outscored the Vikings, 19-17, to trim the lead to just three points, 40-37, at halftime. At the break, Stickler led the way with 10 points for Community.

Coming out of the halftime locker room, the Vikings took their defensive intensity up a notch, holding Chapel Hill to just 10 points in the quarter. Community scored 16 of their own with nine of them coming from Lovvorn in the period, helping the Vikes take a 56-47 lead heading into the final frame. The hosts held Goad to just a pair of free throws in the quarter, cutting the Rockets’ water off in the process.

In the fourth quarter, Community kept Chapel Hill at bay just long enough, connecting on 5/7 free throws down the stretch to hold on to the nine-point win, 71-62. Both teams scored 15 points in the period with Landon Berman leading the way for the Vikes with seven of his 12 points coming in the fourth. The Rockets connected on a trio of three-pointers, but in the end it was not enough to threaten the Vikings.

Community improves to 11-10 (1-3) and will travel to winless Huntland on Tuesday night.
