UNIONVILLE, Tenn. – The Community Vikings (1-1) picked up the first win of the Hunter Ferrell era behind a 21-point third quarter to take down the Santa Fe Wildcats (1-1), 61-57, on Friday night.
Ferrell got a season-high 24 points from Charlie Haskins that led all scorers while Jaxson Williams chipped in with 10 points of his own. As a team, Community connected on eight three-pointers to Santa Fe’s seven, and this ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.
The Wildcats were led by TC Brady’s 17 points, Jax Slaughter’s 15 points, and Brandon Sisk’s 11 points, but it was not enough to overcome the Vikings.
Santa Fe jumped out to a slim 16-14 lead at the end of the opening period, led by Slaughter’s seven points and Carter Adkison’s five points. Williams got going early to keep Community within striking distance, putting in six of his 10 first-half points in the first quarter.
In the second, Community connected on a trio of three-pointers en route to a 17-point period, outscoring Santa Fe, 17-11, to take a 31-27 lead into the halftime locker room. Haskins was able to find a rhythm in the first half, connecting on a pair of threes and ending with eight points.
In the third quarter, Haskins completely took over the game for Community, scoring 11 of the Vikings’ 20 points in the period. Zach Weathers and Masyn Hill each found the range from downtown in the period, scoring their only points of the game on one three each to give the hosts a 52-41 lead going into the final frame.
Community needed every bit of that lead because the Wildcats came roaring back in the fourth quarter behind a pair of triples from Sisk, another three from Brady, and four other points from Slaughter. The Wildcats struggled at the free throw line, however, finishing 10/16 from the charity stripe. Community didn’t fare much better, finishing just 9/16, but Haskins finished 5/6 from the line in the fourth quarter alone to keep the Vikings in front late and preserve the four-point win.
