UNIONVILLE, Tenn. – The Community Vikings (11-6, 0-1) were held to just four points in the third quarter en route to a 75-52 defeat at the hands of the Summertown Eagles (14-3, 1-0) in the District 9-AA opener on Friday night.
Charlie Haskins and Josh Powers each scored a team-high 13 points, but they were the only Vikings to reach double-figures. In total, the Vikings hit eight threes, but four of them came in the fourth quarter when the result was already decided.
Meanwhile, Summertown had four players score in double-figures, led by Lleyton Sherman’s game-high 16 points. Sawyer Sherman finished with 15 points, Graham Howell added 14 points, and Ryder Blackwood chipped in with 13 points. As a team, the Eagles nailed 10 three-pointers on the night.
Early on, Community was able to hang around with the visitors, ending the opening period trailing by just two points, 19-17. Haskins led the hosts with six points, Jaxon Williams added five points, and Powers scored four points. For Summertown, Blackwood connected on a pair of three-pointers while Sawyer Sherman scored eight of his 15 points in the period to lead the Eagles.
In the second quarter, Summertown extended its lead by outscoring the Vikings, 21-15, to take a 40-32 lead heading into the halftime locker room behind Howell’s seven-point period. Haskins scored five points for Community while Powers added four more points.
Coming out for the second half, the Eagles clamped down defensively, pulling away from the Vikings by holding the hosts to just two made field goals the entire third quarter. This resulted in Summertown outscoring Community 16-4 in the period, giving the visitors a commanding 56-36 lead heading into the final frame. Howell and Lleyton Sherman each scored five points to lead the Eagles.
Finally, in the fourth quarter, the Vikings managed to muster up 16 points, but Summertown once again outscored the hosts, 19-16, to secure the 23-point road win.
The Vikings fall to 11-6 overall. Community continues its homestand to open District 9-AA play on Tuesday when they welcome Cascade to Unionville in the first ‘Battle of Bedford’ matchup this season. The first game is scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 p.m.
