CHAPEL HILL, Tenn. – Community Vikings’ (13-14, 2-6) senior Landon Lovvorn put on a show for the final regular season District 9-AA contest against the Forrest Rockets (7-16, 0-8) in Chapel Hill by scoring a game-high 28 points to lead the way in a five-point win, 68-63, on Friday night.
Lovvorn started his scoring just 15 seconds into the first quarter by tagging his first of three three-pointers for nine total points in the period. Fellow senior, Austin Stickler, added six of his own points for 15 of the Vikings 21 in the opening period. Tristan Goad put up 12 of his team-high 21 in the first quarter for the Rockets to help secure a five point lead by the end of the period, 26-21. The Vikes and the Rockets traded leads three times in the first four minutes of the game.
From the free throw stripe, Lovvorn connected four out of four times, grabbed a bucket and hit a three at the halftime buzzer for nine more of his 18 first-half points for Community. Charlie Haskins collected three and Stickler dropped in two more for the Vikings as the lead still changed hands several times during the second quarter. Goad added two while teammate Jon Hightower hit a basket and two tosses from the charity stripe to keep the lead for the Rockets. Going into the locker room, the Vikes were down by four, 42-38.
At the five minute mark of the third quarter, Haskins connected on a layup for two of his four for Community that put them in the lead, 45-44, putting the Vikings ahead for good. Lovvorn punched in six more points for the Vikings. Community's defense held the Rockets to only eight points in the third quarter and at the buzzer were up by seven, 57-50.
Forrest's Hightower again tried his best to keep up with the Vikings scoring and hit for ten of the Rockets’ 13 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to pull ahead of the Vikes. Chapel Hill pulled to as close as two points in the fourth when Goad thumped in a three pointer at the two minute mark of the fourth making the score 62-60, but Community handled the ball well and took solid shots to secure the victory with a final score of 68-63. In addition to Viking Lovvorn's game-high 28 points, Strickler finished with 12, Haskins with nine and fellow senior Landon Berman with seven.
Community will be playing in their District 9-AA tournament on Monday at Grundy County in a rematch with Chapel Hill in the 4-5 play-in game.
