CHAPEL HILL, Tenn. – It wasn’t pretty, but the Community Vikings (13-7, 2-2) managed to overcome a letdown performance against Chapel Hill (5-15, 0-3) behind a 22-point fourth quarter to come away with a 46-37 road win in District 9-AA play on Tuesday night.
Coming off of a big home win over Loretto on Friday night, Community was nearly caught sleeping by the Vikings’ longtime former head coach and current Rockets’ head man, Robbie Davis.
Andrew Tocchio nailed a clutch three along with all four of his free throw attempts in the fourth to lead the Vikings with a game-high 13 points on the night. Jaxon Williams finished with 11 points while Charlie Haskins was held to his lowest scoring output in district play so far with just four points.
Andrew Myers led the Rockets with 12 points, but he was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. Myers was the only player for Chapel Hill to reach double figures.
To start the game, Chapel Hill jumped out to an early 14-6 lead by the end of the opening period. Myers led the way with seven points while Jon Hightower added three more for the hosts. Tocchio hit a three to go along with Williams scoring a two-pointer along with splitting a pair of free throws.
In the second stanza, neither team found an offensive rhythm in any capacity. Chapel Hill scored just two points in the quarter from Myers, but the Rockets were able to hold Community to just four points themselves, allowing the hosts to take a 16-10 lead heading into the halftime locker room.
Coming out for the second half, then Johnathan Lawwel began to find his scoring touch, leading the Vikings with four points in the third quarter. Community outscored Chapel Hill, 14-8, and managed to tie the game up at 24 heading into the final frame.
Finally, the Vikings began to assert themselves in the fourth quarter, eventually outscoring the Rockets, 22-13, to reach the final score of 46-37. Lawwel scored five more points, Tocchio led the way with seven, and Williams added four points to give the visitors just enough of a push to reach .500 in District 9-AA play at the halfway point.
The Vikings improve to 13-7 overall. Community is tentatively scheduled to host Richland on Friday, weather permitting, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
