CHAPEL HILL, Tenn. – The Community Vikings (18-2-2, 2-0) picked up their second District 9-AA win of the season on Thursday with a 3-0 win at Chapel Hill (6-4, 2-1) and handed the Lady Rockets their first district defeat.
Annie Prince was the star for Community, throwing a 5.0 inning no-hitter. Prince allowed just one walk, and she struck out eight batters on 75 pitches before the game was called due to imminent tornadic weather coming through the area.
Her counterpart, Taylor Moreland, threw 5.1 innings before the game was called, giving up three earned runs on six hits, including a home run, while tallying four strikeouts on 91 pitches.
Community scored almost immediately in the top of the first inning after Gracie Daniel got on base with a two-out single. Daniel promptly stole second to get into scoring position, and then cleanup hitter Haylee Webb singled Daniel home for the first run of the game.
Neither team scored until the top of the fourth when the Viqueens put together their final two runs of the night. Taylor Wessner launched a solo home run to double Community’s lead, and then after Alana Tate singled and swiped second and third, Kamryn Farrell drove a ball deep enough into the outfield to allow Tate to beat the throw home on a sacrifice-fly.
Mattie Maxey went 1-3 with a double which was the only extra-base hit outside of Wessner’s homer that either team produced. All six hits came in order from the two-hole hitter, Wessner, to the seven-hole hitter in Alana Tate with one apiece.
Meanwhile, Chapel Hill could not figure out Viqueens’ ace Annie Prince, as Marley Chilton, the Lady Rockets’ cleanup hitter, was the only one on her team to reach base safely outside of a teammate reaching safely on a fielding error.
Community is scheduled to travel to Independence on Monday with first-pitch set for 5:30 p.m.
