CHAPEL HILL, Tenn. – Four Community Viqueens (11-16, 3-5) collected double-figures in the points department to pull out a District 9-AA win against the Forrest Lady Rockets (14-12, 2-6) on Friday night, 56-40. Mattie Maxey topped the list for the Viqueens with 15 points followed closely by teammates Alyssa White with 13, Anna Haskins with12 and Taylar Wessner with 11.
Wessner started out hot in the first quarter from the three point line and collected nine points from downtown in the first minutes of the opening period. Haskins tagged a three and a two for five of her own during the first for Community. Teammates Maxey and White each dropped in a bucket for the rest of Community's 19 points. Sadie Smith hit for seven of the total 11 points for the Lady Rockets. The first quarter buzzer had the Viqueens winning by seven, 18-11.
After a nine-point run by the Viqueens in the first four minutes of the second quarter, Community pushed the lead up to 13 points, 27-14, with 3:20 left until halftime. The Viqueens continued to build their lead with Haskins and Maxey each bagging four points and White adding two of her own for ten of the 13 points that Community accrued. The Viqueens’ defense held their opponent to just ten points and at the halftime buzzer Community had extended their lead on the scoreboard to ten points, 31-21.
Forrest could not stop the Viqueens from crashing the offensive boards in the third period. Maxey tagged two threes and a free throw to collect seven points, White banked in two buckets and a free throw for five, and Haskins swished home a three-pointer for all 15 of Community's points in the quarter. Smith again led Chapel Hill in scoring with seven for the Lady Rockets. The Viqueens never backed off extending their lead to 14 points, 46-32, as the time wound down.
Community went six for six from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. White banked two from the free stripe and a jump shot for four more of her game ending 13. Maxey hit two free throws for two more of her 15 and Wessner knocked in a bucket for two of her final 11. Smith ended the game with 18 for Chapel Hill, but it was not enough to pull ahead of their district rivals. Community pulled out a 16 point win over the Lady Rockets, 56-40, by the end of the fourth period.
Community will be starting play in the District 9-AA tournament on Monday at Grundy County in the 4-5 play-in game against Chapel Hill at 6:00 p.m.
