LYNNVILLE, Tenn. – The Community Viqueens (17-2-2, 1-0) continued their winning ways on the road against the Richland Raiders (3-3, 2-0) on Tuesday night, 4-2.
Community got things started immediately in the top of the first inning after Mattie Maxey drove home Viqueens’ leadoff hitter, Anna Haskins, to take the early 1-0 lead.
Both pitchers settled down over the next two-plus innings. For Richland, Caroline Cheek threw a complete game, lasting 7.0 innings and giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits and four walks with just one strikeout on 100 pitches.
Annie Prince got the start in the circle for Community, throwing 4.0 innings while giving up just one hit and one walk to go with 10 punchouts on 49 pitches to pick up the win. Haylee Webb came on in relief, giving up two earned runs on four hits and a pair of strikeouts on 41 pitches.
The Viqueens doubled their lead in the top of the fourth inning, 2-0, and added another run in the top of the fifth as well. However, Richland responded in the bottom of the sixth inning, cutting the lead to one run, 3-2. Following a Katelyn Bass solo home run, Preslee Crabtree reached second on a double. Webb retired the next two batters, but then Natalie Gordon delivered a two-out base hit to drive home Crabtree for Richland’s second and final run of the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Community tacked on another insurance run to go back up by two runs, 4-2. Webb sat down the Raiders’ lineup in the home half of the seventh, getting the final three outs to secure the Viqueen’s sixth-consecutive win.
For the Viqueens, Maxey finished 1-4 with one RBI, Taylor Wessner went 1-4 with a stolen base, and Webb led the team going 2-4 with a triple. Alana Tate batted 1-3 with one RBI, Prince chipped in going 1-3, and Victoria Wells went 1-1 with a sacrifice to drive home a run.
Community picks up their 17th win of the season, and will return to District 9-AA play on Thursday night in Chapel Hill with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
