Unionville, Tenn. – The Community Viqueens (9-15, 1-4) had the District 9-AA leaders on the ropes for 31 minutes and 50 seconds of Tuesday’s matchup before Liv Prater connected on a last-second game-winner to secure the season sweep and the overall number one seed in the upcoming district tournament for Cannon County (16-5, 7-1), 42-40.
Anna Haskins led all scorers with a game-high 16 points, and she was joined in double-figures by Mattie Maxey who finished with 12 points.
For Cannon County, Abi Alexander unsurprisingly led the way with a team-high 13 points followed by 12 points from Addie King.
To start, Community held Cannon County without a single field goal in the opening period, taking a 12-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Haskins was a perfect 5/5 at the free throw line while Alyssa White chipped in with four points of her own. Maxey finished the period with three points, but went just 1/4 at the charity stripe. Jaylynn Taylor connected on the lone free throw for the Lionettes.
In the second quarter, Cannon County exploded for 20 points as a team. Nine points from King and six from Alexander led the way for the Lionettes while Elly Bain, a transfer from Fayetteville City, chipped in with five points of her own off the bench. Maxey attempted to match Cannon County’s production, tallying seven points of her own, but went 3/5 from the line in the period. Haskins, Brooklyn Yoes, and Sara Flanagan each put in a two-point field goal before the halftime horn sounded with Community holding onto a four-point lead, 25-21.
Coming out of the halftime locker room, the Viqueens matched the Lionettes, ending the third quarter with both teams scoring 11 points and Community taking a 36-32 lead into the final frame. Haskins scored nine of her team’s 11 points in the period, but after she connected on the last two free throws of the quarter, she would not score again. Alexander scored six to lead Cannon County.
In the final frame, Community’s offense completely shut down, scoring just four points in the period. Still, the Viqueens had a chance to win the game with less than 15 seconds left. With the game tied at 40 and the hosts in possession, the Viqueens missed the go-ahead layup, giving Cannon County enough time to race down the court and find Prater for the game-winning field goal. Maxey scored two points but went 0/2 from the line while White scored for the first time since the first quarter. The Lionettes converted on 4/5 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull out the seemingly unlikely win, 42-40.
Community falls to 9-15 (1-4) and will travel to Grundy County on Friday night with tip-off coming at 6:00 p.m.
