UNIONVILLE, Tenn. – After run-ruling the Cascade Lady Champions (6-7, 2-3), 15-0, in the first meeting in Bell Buckle, the Community Viqueens (22-2-2, 5-0) scored just two runs in the second matchup at home on Tuesday night. However, thanks to star pitcher Annie Prince following up her five-inning perfect game at Cascade with a masterful seven-inning no-hitter at home, the Viqueens mustered up just enough offense to stay unbeaten in District 9-AA play, 2-0.
Prince threw the complete 7.0 innings, and of the 21 outs recorded, 19 were by way of the strikeout, an incredible 90% rate. Prince walked just two batters on 93 pitches.
Her counterpart, Jocelyn Laughlin, responded in a big way after her performance in the first meeting, throwing 6.0 innings and giving up just two earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out just a single batter on 104 pitches.
Community broke the seal in the bottom of the second inning after Carlie Blanton’s leadoff single led to an RBI-single from Taylor Wessner to give the Viqueens a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Viqueens scored their second and final run of the game after Mattie Maxey launched her team-leading fifth home run of the season to double Community’s lead to 2-0.
Maxey, who is just a freshman, took Laughlin deep in the second-consecutive meeting after her first-inning round-tripper in the first meeting on April 14th.
In all, Community’s offense mustered up just five base hits as a team. Anna Haskins led off and finished 1-3 with a double, Maxey went 1-2 with her home run and a walk, and Gracie Daniel went 1-2 with a walk. Carlie Blanton finished 1-3, and Taylor Wessner went 1-3 with an RBI-single. Alana Tate and Prince both worked a walk as well.
Cascade closes out the District 9-AA slate with a trip to Cannon County on Monday, April 28th, with first-pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
Community plays its final District 9-AA game of the regular season at home against Cannon County on Tuesday, April 29th, with first-pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
